DescriptionAn eye doctor is a person who provides a specialized service related to vision or eye care. It is anyone involved in eye health care, from a physician with a minimal level of post-graduate training to medical practitioners with a doctoral degree of vision care. The term “eye doctor” may also be used when referring to optometrists, ophthalmologists, opticians and visual specialists. In general, the eye doctor will diagnose problems with the eye and perform specialized eye care exams to diagnose conditions and provide therapy to restore normal vision.

Education requirements to practice as an eye doctor, you must hold a degree from an accredited eye school or university. There are some states that require optometrists to have additional education beyond what is required for regular licensed doctors. Some states require optometrists to have additional training in specialized fields like optometry, ophthalmology, optoanalysis and vision science. Other states don’t have specific requirements, but most opticians do complete a year of training before they are able to apply for a license in this field. In most states, you can start your career as an optician as soon as you complete your undergraduate degree.

Training To become an optometrist, students undergo two years of graduate-level education at an eye college. During this time, students will learn everything that is related to visual processes, including the science of vision and its disorders, the application of corrective eye treatments, and the prevention of diseases related to the visual system. Optometrists must pass written and clinical examinations and undergo extensive training and supervision before they can practice legally.

Experience Doctors must obtain additional years of specialized training after graduating from eye doctor schools. During this time, optometrists gain experience by serving as a resident in a general practitioner’s office, or as an eye surgeon in a hospital. They can also choose to specialize in a particular eye disease, such as refractive angioedema or cataract. Optometrist specialists can choose to focus on one particular eye condition or group of eye diseases, such as glaucoma or macular degeneration. A specialist can practice independently, or work in a doctor’s office as an assistant to a primary care physician or optometrist. View here for more details about eye care.

Certification All states require optometrists to be certified before they can practice legally. In most states, this requirement is voluntary and can be achieved by taking and passing a national certification exam. In opting to become certified, optometrists are required to take and pass a national examination that tests visual ability and knowledge in diagnosing and treating vision problems. In order to become certified, optometrists must successfully complete two additional educational years that include at least 100 hours of vision education and practice.
